We have a growing herd of dairy goats, and a growing flock of sheep. We also graze a herd of cattle for a neighbouring farmer. For the past four years, we have exclusively used electric fencing. We are finding that this arrangement is less than satisfactory for farmer and beast. We need to erect permanent perimeter fencing, within which we can use movable electric fences, creating smaller paddocks. The perimeter fencing will serve as an additional safeguard against predation, and escapes.
Our perimeter fencing will be a mix of traditional fences – post and board – and living fences, or hedgerows. The hedgerows will provide food an habitat for our native wildlife in addition to corralling our livestock. It will also serve as a deterrant to trespassers, which have been a significant problem here over the past 4 years.
Beginning in the spring, we will start erecting fence and planting hedgerows. This is a large job, and as such, will be ongoing until it is complete. We will also need assistance posting private property signs around the farm.
